Capture the seasons in a vase

Ikebana, or kado, is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The practice arrived in Japan with Buddhism over 1,000 years ago, and derives from floral offerings set before temple altars. The art form was first codified in the 15th century by the Ikenobo School in Kyoto, which still exists today. Ikebana balances seasonal expression with the artist’s own spirit, and explores the relationship between humans and the natural world.

Your teacher is a professor in the Ikenobo School. She is one of only a handful of people in the world with access to the school’s secret document, and has spent a month meditating on the philosophy contained within. This forms the foundation of your lesson. Your teacher will also guide you in creating your own arrangements, both traditional and modern.
